About Antiques at York's Tenement

Antiques at York’s Tenement was founded by Doris Urquhart and her husband, Christopher Richardson, in 2010. They have a gallery at Yoxford in Suffolk, between the coastal resorts of Aldeburgh and Southwold, contained in a tin ‘tabernacle’ style structure that was custom built for them in Cornwall. They specialise in folk art and naïve paintings, complimented by painted and country furniture, pottery and metalwork.

Doris began trading in antiques at Alfies Antique Market, London, in 1980. She continued to trade from there and a shop opposite until 1989. Having completed her training as a barrister, she then practiced at the bar, before becoming a full time antiques dealer in 2007, this time supported by Christopher, also an ex-lawyer, who began antiques dealing in the West End with Simon Redburn Antiques in 1973. They started their joint business in Lewes, East Sussex, before moving to Suffolk in 2009 where Antiques at York’s Tenement was launched.

Throughout her time at the bar, Doris actively continued to buy and sell antiques, adding to her experience and her private collection. She brings to her business a lifelong passion for the unpretentious yet often sophisticated and amusing qualities to be found in folk art, naïve paintings and primitive pieces, combined with a natural eye, developed over 30 years of dealing and collecting, for distinguishing the best examples. Christopher is likewise a lifelong antiques collector and enthusiast, mainly for vernacular furniture and genre paintings.

The original state and condition of the object or painting, its surface texture and unusual style or character are among the priorities that Doris and Christopher bring to bear in selecting what to buy. They have a love of exceptional, homely things, combined with a great enthusiasm for seeking them out.

Elected to BADA membership for Folk art; naïve and primitive paintings.
